ChirpSense matches the songs it hears against an offline library of 350+ backyard species, right there on the shelf, with no network involved. Plug it into power, set it near a window, and it starts naming birds. There is nothing to connect first.
What comes in the box is the whole setup: the ChirpSense display, an oak base, a fabric-wrapped USB-C power cable, and a small printed field guide. No glowing LEDs, no startup chime, no setup checklist to work through.
Wi-Fi setup without the tiny keyboard
When you do want Wi-Fi, there's no app and no fiddly on-screen keyboard. You send your network details to the device with a sound. Hold your phone near ChirpSense, play the short setup chirp from any browser, and it hears your Wi-Fi across the room. The bird logo on its screen tells you exactly where you are:
Red: it's listening
Power it on and the logo turns red for the first minute while it listens for the setup chirp. Play it from your phone.
Blue: send your network
Once it's awake the logo turns blue. Pick your network by the number shown on screen, or type its name on your phone, then play the tones. Your details travel as sound. Nothing gets typed on the device.
Green: connected
The logo turns green and you're done. You never installed an app or made an account.
What turning on Wi-Fi gets you
Wi-Fi is a bonus, not a requirement, and it earns its keep in two small ways. It brings occasional updates to the bird library so identification keeps improving, and it lets you opt in to syncing your daily journal across devices later. Everyday listening and naming needs none of it. If you never connect ChirpSense to anything, it still does the main job every day.
No app, no account, nothing uploaded
ChirpSense processes what it hears on the device. It keeps the result, like "Carolina wren at 7:12," plus a small confidence score. The raw audio never leaves the device, and we have no way to reach it. There is no account tied to your name and no app collecting anything in the background.
That is the opposite of how most always-listening bird gadgets work. The usual setup asks you to install an app, make an account, connect the sensor to Wi-Fi, and stream your backyard audio to a company's cloud so it can be identified there.
